Sighting Wildlife: The Peechi Vazhani Wildlife, which was established here in 1958 has been luring the nature lovers ever since. The sanctuary is home to almost 25 species of mammals including tigers, leopards and foxes. Herds of spotted deer are common sights here. Barking deer, elk are also present. Though elephants are also present here, they are rare to spot.
The flora out here is quite rich and invites myriad birds – both permanent residents and the migratory kind. There are also many snakes that reside at the Peechi Vazhani Wildlife sanctuary. It would be a good idea to be armed with a pair of binoculars so as to enhance your avian experience further.
Pilgrimage sites: If it is your first time in Thrissur, a visit to the great Vadakkunnathan temple is a must. The visit makes one realise that the city, like many cities, has developed and evolved around this great temple. The Guruvayur temple and the Thriprayar temple are the other popular spots worth visiting. Most of these temples though still do not allow non-Hindus to enter the inner sanctum.
Soak in some Heritage: For all those who have an insatiable curiosity of the past, a visit to the Shakthan Thamburan palace is well recommended. Another must visit is the Vadakkekkara palace and the Kudakallu to be visited. The Kudakallu is a wonderful example of Kerala-Dutch architecture and was built by the great ruler Raja Rama Varma. One could also pay a visit to the Archaeological museum and the Art museum if interested.
