Peechi Dam – A Scenic and Functional Marvel in Thrissur

Peechi Dam, Thrissur

Peechi Dam, located in the scenic district of Thrissur, Kerala, is not only an engineering marvel but also a picturesque spot that has attracted nature lovers, tourists, and researchers for years. Built across the Manali River, this dam plays a crucial role in irrigation, drinking water supply, and flood control for Thrissur and nearby areas. Its serene beauty, combined with its historical and environmental significance, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Kerala.

History and Purpose

Peechi Dam was commissioned in 1957 as a major irrigation project aimed at addressing the water needs of Thrissur district. It was constructed to irrigate over 17,000 hectares of land, primarily for paddy cultivation, and provide drinking water to the rapidly growing population of Thrissur Taluk. Since its construction, the dam has been instrumental in transforming the agricultural landscape of the region, ensuring water supply for both irrigation and domestic purposes.

Location and Accessibility

Located about 23 kilometers from the city of Thrissur, Peechi Dam is easily accessible by road. The central location of the dam makes it a popular weekend getaway for locals and tourists alike. Its proximity to the Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary adds further appeal, offering visitors a chance to explore the natural beauty and wildlife of the area.

Engineering and Structure

The Peechi Dam is a straight gravity masonry structure, 213.36 meters long and with a maximum height of 41.85 meters. The gross storage capacity of the reservoir at full reservoir level (FRL) is 94.946 million cubic meters. The dam has been built to efficiently manage water resources, with a design that has stood the test of time for over six decades. Additionally, there is a saddle dam located at the northeastern side, adding an extra layer of structural support.

Irrigation and Water Supply

One of the primary reasons for constructing the Peechi Dam was to support agriculture in the region. The dam helps irrigate more than 17,000 hectares of land, particularly benefiting paddy fields in Thrissur. The irrigation season typically begins in November and continues through March, ensuring that crops receive adequate water during dry periods.

The dam is also the primary source of drinking water for much of Thrissur Taluk, providing clean and reliable water to thousands of households in the area.

Flood Control and Management

Peechi Dam plays a vital role in flood management for the region. The dam’s spillway has a discharge capacity of 368.118 cubic meters per second (cumecs), which helps mitigate potential flood risks during the monsoon season. The dam is equipped with an advanced flood management system, including specific warning levels that are monitored closely. The first flood warning is issued when the water level reaches 78 meters, with subsequent warnings as the levels rise further.

Flood management procedures are designed to minimize damage and ensure public safety, with water releases carefully controlled based on reservoir levels and inflow forecasts.

Environmental Importance

Beyond its functional role in water management, Peechi Dam is part of the Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, an ecologically significant area that supports a variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and numerous bird species. The reservoir is also home to many species of fish and aquatic life, contributing to the biodiversity of the region.

The sanctuary surrounding the dam is a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, offering opportunities for trekking, birdwatching, and exploring the lush forests. The dam and its reservoir are crucial to maintaining the ecological balance in this part of Kerala.
